BEIJING: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized on Thursday that the immediate priority is to bring the United States and Iran back to the negotiating table and pursue a political resolution.
Wang made these remarks during a meeting in Beijing with Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, where both sides discussed the evolving situation in the Middle East.
“The U.S.-Israel war against Iran should never have happened, and its prolongation has already seriously affected both international energy security and the safety of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz,” Wang said.
He reiterated China’s long-standing position of resolving international disputes through dialogue and consultation, while opposing the use of force.
Wang also highlighted that China maintains an objective and impartial stance, actively working to promote peace and end conflicts. He added that China supports Pakistan’s mediation efforts and is prepared to stay engaged with all parties to play a constructive role.
He further noted that China is ready to collaborate with Italy to implement the shared understandings reached by their leaders and sustain stable and positive bilateral relations.
Wang pointed out that ongoing geopolitical tensions and escalating conflicts this year have posed serious challenges to global security and the international order. He added that both China and Italy, as ancient civilizations, value peace and play important roles in supporting multilateralism, expressing China’s willingness to strengthen coordination with Italy on global affairs.
Tajani, for his part, reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to its relationship with China and its adherence to the one-China policy.
He acknowledged China’s influential role in international affairs and multilateral platforms such as the United Nations, and expressed Italy’s support for initiatives proposed by China’s leadership to address regional and global challenges.
Tajani also said Italy is keen to enhance multilateral cooperation with China to jointly promote global peace, stability, and development.
The two sides also exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis and other international issues.
