Global Times: When asked to comment on the recent claim by Raymond Greene, Director of the Taipei Office of The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), following Kuomintang Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun’s recent mainland visit, that the US has consistently hoped for stable cross-Straits interactions and expects the mainland to maintain communication channels with all political parties in the island of Taiwan, especially the so-called “democratically-elected government,” while refraining from “threats or military pressure,” Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said at a regular press conference on Wednesday that certain individuals in the US are stirring things up and repeatedly hyping the so-called “mainland threat or military pressure,” which completely distorts the facts and reflects ulterior motives.
Chen said that both sides across the Straits belong to one China. As long as they adhere to the 1992 Consensus and opposing Taiwan independence, any political party or group in the Taiwan island will face no obstacle in exchanging with the mainland.
Chen added that the DPP authority’s collusion with external forces to pursue “Taiwan independence” and engage in provocations is the root cause of the tension and turbulence across the Taiwan Straits. Certain individuals in the US are stirring things up and repeatedly hyping the so-called “mainland threat or military pressure,” which completely distorts the facts and reflects ulterior motives.
It must be emphasized that the Taiwan question is China’s internal affair and brooks no external interference. The US side should abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, and handle Taiwan-related issues with the utmost prudence, Chen said.
