Pakistan and China Forge Green Mobility Partnership at 2025 Shanghai Auto Exhibition Featuring Cutting-Edge EV Innovations

The Consulate General of Pakistan in Shanghai organized a New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Procurement Conference in collaboration with the 2025 Shanghai International Auto Show, drawing participation from approximately 60 leading Chinese automotive firms such as BYD, Geely, and Skyworth. The event garnered global attention for its display of advanced electric vehicle (EV) technologies, with Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan hailing it as “a testament to China’s dominance in the electric vehicle sector.”

“Prior to attending, I believed I had a grasp of China’s advancements in EVs,” remarked Khan. “However, the sheer magnitude of innovation here is unparalleled. From premium vehicles to heavy-duty commercial trucks, Chinese companies are showcasing comprehensive EV ecosystems that position them years ahead of international rivals.”

Held from April 25 to May 2, the eight-day exhibition features pioneering automotive solutions from nearly 1,000 enterprises across 26 nations. The concurrent procurement conference on April 29 provided a strategic platform for Punjab’s delegation to engage with manufacturers. “Pakistan must transition to green energy and embrace EV technology,” Khan asserted, highlighting his province’s commitment to sustainable transportation. Lahore’s ongoing pilot project, which operates 27 electric buses, underscores this shift.

Punjab authorities are now finalizing plans to acquire 500 additional electric buses, with five firms shortlisted for the tender. “We aim to deploy all 500 buses by mid-2024,” Khan stated. The province further intends to introduce 600 more electric buses starting July 2024, expanding services beyond urban centers like Lahore to enhance rural connectivity. “Rural mobility is a priority,” Khan emphasized. Complementing these efforts, Punjab will launch three new metro lines in Lahore, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala to curb emissions.

Parallel initiatives include deploying 1,100 electric taxis in Lahore, supported by dedicated charging stations, and incentivizing private investors to develop charging infrastructure through government land allocations. Under the Punjab Clean Air Program (PCAP), the province also plans to distribute 120,000 electric two- and three-wheelers over three years, alongside 10,000 electric bikes for women in education and healthcare sectors.

“We are witnessing a transformative era,” Khan declared. “The Shanghai Auto Show confirmed that electrification is the future, and Punjab is resolved to remain at the forefront of this revolution.”
