(Global Times): The Chinese Embassy in Myanmar issued a warning to Chinese nationals about rising cases of cross-border marriage scams and illegal employment disputes, urging citizens to remain vigilant and avoid unlawful activities.

In a statement published on the embassy’s official website, the embassy said several recent cases involving fraudulent cross-border marriages have been reported in Myanmar. Chinese citizens were cautioned not to trust online matchmaking advertisements or the idea of “buying a foreign wife.”The embassy emphasized that under Chinese laws and regulations, no matchmaking agency or individual is permitted to engage in, or covertly facilitate, cross-border marriage brokerage for profit through deceptive means.

Myanmar, the statement noted, strictly enforces laws against human trafficking. Individuals who pay high brokerage fees or attempt to enter into so-called “purchased marriages” under the guise of bride prices may be detained on suspicion of human trafficking and could face prolonged legal proceedings or imprisonment.

The embassy urged Chinese nationals to be alert to marriage-related scams and to abandon the misconception of “buying a foreign wife.” It stressed that cross-border marriages must be based on mutual consent and genuine emotional bonds. Such illegal practices can lead to extortion, personal safety threats, physical harm, and serious financial losses.

The statement also reminded citizens that marriage registration and residence permits must comply with local laws, warning that violations—or assisting others in breaking the law—can result in severe legal consequences.

In addition, the embassy advised Chinese nationals not to engage in illegal employment in Myanmar. Prospective workers were urged to use licensed recruitment agencies, sign formal labor contracts, and avoid informal referrals or promises of high pay, which often carry significant legal and personal risks.
