(Xinhua): China and Sri Lanka have jointly launched a major initiative aimed at digitally transforming Sri Lanka’s general education system, marking an important step in bilateral cooperation in the education sector.

The China-Aid Digital Transformation Project of General Education in Sri Lanka was officially unveiled on Wednesday at a ceremony in Colombo, attended by Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong.

Under the project, Sri Lanka will establish an education cloud data center, a multimedia conference center, and a streaming media hub to strengthen digital infrastructure across the education sector. The initiative also includes the development of a software-defined network management system for the Ministries of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education.

As part of the project, 900 smart classrooms will be set up in 500 schools nationwide, enhancing access to digital learning tools. In addition, digital teaching resources for the Chinese language will be introduced to support language education.

Addressing the ceremony, Prime Minister Amarasuriya said the project aligns closely with Sri Lanka’s broader digital economy agenda, as it will enable data-driven decision-making, improve service delivery, and enhance connectivity across the education system.

Ambassador Qi said that education is vital to a country’s future, adding that the Chinese government has consistently supported Sri Lanka’s educational development and will continue its commitment through education and development cooperation.
