Chinese and US military officials met in Hawaii this week for “candid and constructive” discussions under the 2025 China-US Military Maritime Consultative Agreement (MMCA), Chinese state media reported on Saturday.
The second round of working group talks and the annual MMCA meeting took place from Tuesday to Thursday, according to China Daily.
Both sides held discussions on the current maritime and air security situation, reviewed recent encounters at sea and in the air, and evaluated the implementation of the bilateral memorandum of understanding on safe conduct during air and maritime interactions.
China reiterated its “firm opposition” to activities conducted under the banner of freedom of navigation and overflight that it says threaten its sovereignty and security. The first MMCA working group meeting for 2025 was held in Shanghai in April.
