China supports Global South in fighting climate change: Brazilian minister

BELEM, Brazil, Nov. 12: China has made significant contributions to the development of innovative green technologies and has played an important role in supporting countries of the Global South in addressing climate change, Brazilian Minister of Environment and Climate Change Marina Silva said Tuesday.

Speaking to Xinhua on the sidelines of the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belem, Silva emphasized the need for global collaboration to tackle the climate crisis.

“We are facing a global challenge that requires coordinated action by all nations,” Silva said, adding that “countries from the Global South have a key role to play.”

Silva commended China’s leadership in technological innovation and efforts to make clean energy solutions more accessible worldwide.

“China has made a great contribution, especially in developing technologies that have lowered the cost of solar and wind energy, as well as advancing the electric vehicle industry,” she said. “Its contribution extends far beyond its own borders.”

COP30, held in Brazil’s Amazon city of Belem through Nov. 21, brings together representatives from nearly 200 countries and regions to accelerate global efforts on climate mitigation, adaptation, and financing under the United Nations climate framework.
