BEIJING: Max Planck Society and Chinese Academy of Sciences have jointly inaugurated a new research hub focused on synthetic biology, marking a significant step in international scientific collaboration. The ‘Max PlanckâCAS Center for Synthetic Biochemistry’ was officially launched on Saturday in Shenzhen.
The initiative represents the first dedicated partnership between the two institutions in the rapidly advancing field of synthetic biology. The center has been co-established by the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology and the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology. It aims to strengthen global cooperation in cutting-edge life sciences while fostering innovation and talent development in synthetic biotechnology.
According to Liu Chenli, director of SIAT and co-director of the center, the initiative signals a shift in international scientific cooperationâfrom project-based partnerships to a more institutionalized and multilateral framework. He emphasized that the platform is designed to bring together global scientists to tackle shared challenges in synthetic biology and biomanufacturing.
Patrick Cramer, president of the Max Planck Society, highlighted Shenzhenâs role as a global hub of innovation and openness. He expressed hope that the new center would serve as a model of Sino-German collaboration, fostering high-impact research and nurturing the next generation of scientists.
