BEIJING: China has urged the United States to protect the lawful rights and interests of Chinese journalists working in the country after the Trump administration decided to shorten visa durations for foreign journalists, a move that also affects reporters from China.
Speaking at a regular press briefing on Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian criticized the U.S. decision, saying restrictions on people-to-people exchanges benefit neither side. He said China strongly opposes what it described as a discriminatory, country-specific policy adopted by the United States.
Lin stated that the new visa policy undermines the three-point consensus on media issues reached between China and the United States in 2021 and disrupts the normal operations of Chinese media organizations in the U.S.
“China reserves the right to take reciprocal countermeasures,” Lin said.
