Global Times: China’s representative to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Wednesday strongly refuted false remarks related to China made by Japan and a few other countries, saying Japan’s criticism of other nations’ human rights records cannot conceal its own shortcomings and Japan risks repeating the mistakes of history if it fails to engage in genuine self-examination.
The Chinese representative made the remarks during the high-level segment of the 61st session of the UNHRC, according to a release from China’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other International Organizations in Switzerland.
China’s Xinjiang and Xizang are currently experiencing economic development and social stability, with the rights of people of all ethnic groups fully guaranteed, said the Chinese representative. Since the implementation of the Law on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Hong Kong has entered a new stage of transition from stability to prosperity. Japan and certain other countries have spread false information and attacked and smeared China, which China firmly opposes and resolutely rejects.
The Chinese representative emphasized that Japan’s criticism of other countries’ human rights situations cannot cover up its own human rights shortcomings. Japan has refused to assume historical responsibility over issues such as the “comfort women,” disregarded concerns raised by UN human rights mechanisms, and created a chilling effect through retaliatory pressure.
Japan once launched wars of aggression and committed serious war crimes, yet has never engaged in profound reflection. China urges Japan to immediately engage in self-examination; otherwise, it risks repeating the mistakes of history, said the Chinese representative.
