The Consulate General of Pakistan in Shanghai hosted a New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Procurement Conference in conjunction with the 2025 Shanghai International Auto Show, drawing participation from around 60 leading Chinese EV manufacturers, including BYD, Geely, and Skyworth, according to Gwadar Pro.

Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan, who led the delegation, praised the event as a showcase of China’s global leadership in electric mobility. “This exhibition is a powerful demonstration of China’s strength in electric vehicle innovation,” he said. “From luxury cars to commercial trucks, Chinese manufacturers are delivering integrated EV solutions that are far ahead of the global curve.”

The eight-day exhibition, running from April 25 to May 2, featured cutting-edge automotive technology from nearly 1,000 companies representing 26 countries. The New Energy Vehicle Procurement Conference, held on April 29, was a key engagement for the Punjab delegation.

“It’s time for Pakistan to embrace green mobility,” said Bilal Akbar Khan. He noted that Punjab has already made progress, with 27 electric buses currently operational in Lahore under a pilot initiative.

The provincial government is now finalizing the procurement of an additional 500 electric buses, with five firms shortlisted in the tender process. “Our goal is to have all 500 buses on the road by mid-year,” Khan said. He also announced plans to introduce 600 additional electric buses starting in July, expanding service beyond major cities to enhance rural mobility.

“Rural transport must not be left behind,” he added. New metro routes are being planned in Lahore, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala, while Lahore will see the deployment of 1,100 electric taxis. Each fleet of 25 vehicles will be supported by a dedicated charging station.

Private sector investment is also being encouraged, with the government offering incentives to support the development of EV infrastructure. Under the Punjab Clean Air Program (PCAP), the province aims to distribute 120,000 electric two- and three-wheelers over the next three years, along with 10,000 electric bikes for delivery workers and healthcare personnel.

“The Shanghai Auto Show has proven that the future is electric,” Bilal Akbar Khan said, “and Punjab is committed to being part of that transformation.”
