Global Times – Taiwan media exposed that the military on the island has newly established a high-level “joint firepower coordination center” to coordinate its overcomplicated firepower deployment, with US personnel involved amid US-made equipment’s commissioning. A Chinese mainland expert on Monday slammed the move as a futile attempt to resist reunification and seek “independence” by relying on the US.
Against the backdrop of military services on the island of Taiwan successively taking delivery of US-made firepower equipment, coupled with the various types of “domestically developed” special-mission missiles currently in service, the island’s defense authority has newly established a “joint firepower coordination center” of the highest level at a military compound in, Taipei, Taiwan media United Daily News (UDN) reported late on Sunday.
The center is tasked with coordinating the asymmetric firepower deployment across all military branches. In addition, US personnel hold a large number of seats in the coordination center, and the island and the US have already conducted multiple joint staff exercises, the UDN report claimed.
The UDN report claimed that some of the island of Taiwan’s weapons have ranges from 700 kilometers to 1,000 kilometers, but the weapon types are overcomplicated, and its armed forces have long faced issues in obtaining intelligence on the dynamic targets of the mainland as they lack dedicated military reconnaissance satellites. Citing an unnamed scholar, the report claimed that the US military could provide the intelligence required.
Wang Yunfei, a Chinese mainland military affairs expert, told the Global Times on Monday that the island of Taiwan’s “joint firepower coordination center” and the US involvement exposed that the Taiwan military could not make use of its overcomplicated arsenal and form systematic combat capabilities on its own, so it has to rely on the US.
The island of Taiwan is attempting to seek “independence” by relying on the US, but the island’s weapons, even coordinated under the newly established center, are not that advanced, and are no match for the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), Wang said, noting that the “Taiwan independence” secessionist force’s attempts to resist reunification are futile.
In response to an arms sale plan by the US to the island of Taiwan in December last year, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Jiang Bin said on December 19, 2025 that The US’ announcement of a large-scale arms sales package to the Taiwan region of China constitutes a serious violation of the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqués. It gravely undermines China’s sovereignty and security interests, severely erodes China-US strategic mutual trust, and sends a seriously wrong signal to “Taiwan independence” secessionist forces. China expresses its strong dissatisfaction with and firm opposition to this move, and has already lodged solemn representations with the US side.
Jiang said that the complete reunification of China is an irresistible historical trend that no force can hold back. The “Taiwan independence” secessionist forces, willing to sacrifice the safety and well-being of compatriots in Taiwan and fatten American arms dealers with the hard-earned money of the people, vainly attempt to “seek independence by force”. In the end, they will only be like moths flying into a flame, bringing about their own destruction.
The US side has repeatedly gone back on its words and broken its promises, while conniving at and supporting “Taiwan independence” forces. Such acts will only end up backfiring on itself, Jiang noted, saying, “we urge the US side to earnestly fulfill its commitment of not supporting “Taiwan independence” and immediately halt arms sales to Taiwan.”
The PLA will continue to intensify combat training and preparedness, take powerful measures to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and resolutely foil the separatist attempts of “Taiwan independence” and the schemes of external interference, the spokesperson said.
