BEIJING: South China’s resort city of Sanya has launched a new airport terminal to strengthen its travel capacity during the peak Spring Festival season.Terminal 3 of Sanya Phoenix International Airport in Hainan Province officially began operations on Friday.
With this addition, the airport’s total terminal area has expanded to 228,000 square meters, and its annual passenger handling capacity is now projected to reach 30 million.
Airport officials described the opening as a significant milestone in its expansion plan and operational upgrade. Trial operations started on Feb. 1, when Hainan Airlines shifted four routes to the new terminal. From Feb. 8 onward, the airline intends to move all its outbound flights from Sanya to Terminal 3, with plans to gradually increase flight operations there to ease congestion in Terminals 1 and 2.
As a major transport gateway for the Hainan Free Trade Port, Sanya Phoenix International Airport plays a crucial role in connecting the city with domestic and international destinations.This year’s Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year, falls on Feb. 17.
