MUNICH, Germany, (Xinhua) — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday urged China and Germany to strengthen strategic communication, and jointly oppose unilateralism and bloc confrontation.
Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the appeal during talks with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.
Both sides should firmly uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, replace the “law of the jungle” with global governance, and work together to serve as a stabilizing force in a turbulent world, said Wang.
The world today is becoming increasingly unstable, with the existing international order suffering severe setbacks and multilateralism facing serious challenges, Wang noted. At this critical juncture, he said, enhanced strategic communication between China and Germany — and their joint opposition to unilateralism and resistance to bloc confrontation — carries significance that goes far beyond their bilateral relationship.
China stands ready to work with Germany to prepare for the next stage of high-level exchanges, add new dimensions to the China-Germany all-round strategic partnership, achieve new progress in cooperation across various fields and make more contributions to the sound and steady development of China-EU relations, he said. Economic and trade cooperation serves as the anchor of China-Germany relations, Wang noted.
China is committed to high-standard opening up, and is ready to foster a first-class business environment that is market-oriented, law-based and internationalized for German and other foreign enterprises, so that they may share in China’s development opportunities, he said.
For his part, Wadephul said the steady development of Germany-China relations could provide much-needed stability for a world that is marked by instability and turbulence. Germany attaches high importance to China, welcomes a more open China, and holds high expectations for the Chinese market, he said.
Noting that Germany-China cooperation boasts enormous potential, he said that the German side opposes economic decoupling and trade protectionism, and welcomes fair competition.
He reaffirmed Germany’s adherence to the one-China policy, and expressed hope to maintain closer high-level exchanges with China and comprehensively advance Germany-China relations. The two sides also exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis and other international and regional issues
