United Nations: China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Sun Lei, has called for an immediate de-escalation of the Ukraine conflict, urging all sides to prioritize peace efforts and work toward a ceasefire as soon as possible.

Speaking at a UN Security Council briefing on Ukraine on Monday, Sun said the crisis remains prolonged and difficult to resolve, with serious implications for peace and stability across Europe and the wider world.

“An early ceasefire and political solution to the crisis are the shared aspiration of the international community,” he said.

Sun stressed the importance of advancing peace negotiations, noting that the opportunity for dialogue on the Ukraine issue is already open.

“As long as we persist in talks, we will see the dawn of peace,” Sun said, adding that China hopes all relevant parties will take part in the peace process.

He reiterated that China’s position on the Ukraine issue has remained consistent, saying Beijing will continue to maintain an objective and impartial stance, promote peace talks, stay in communication with all sides, and play a constructive role in supporting a political resolution.

Addressing comments made by the US representative, Sun rejected what he described as repeated accusations and misinformation directed at China.

Responding to what he called “same old rhetoric” and disinformation from the U.S. representative, Sun said, “This is totally unacceptable.”

“China is neither the creator of the crisis nor a party to it,” the ambassador said, adding that China has consistently worked to promote a ceasefire, end the conflict, and facilitate peace talks. China’s objective and impartial position and its constructive role have been widely recognized by the international community, he said.

He further argued that since the start of the conflict, it has been the United States—not China—that has continued supplying weapons to the battlefield and contributing to the prolonging of the war.

“In fact, since the outbreak of the crisis, it is the United States, not China, that has long supplied weapons to the battlefield and attempted to prolong the conflict. We once again urge the United States to stop shifting the blame and contribute more to the ceasefire and peace talks,” he concluded.
