BEIJING, (Xinhua) — China’s countermeasures against Japanese politician Keiji Furuya are a just act based on Chinese law, aimed at safeguarding national interests, and in line with international norms, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office said on Monday.
Spokesperson Zhu Fenglian made the remarks when asked to comment on countermeasures announced by the Chinese foreign ministry against the member of Japan’s House of Representatives for his egregious acts related to Taiwan.
Zhu reiterated that the Taiwan question lies at the core of China’s core interests and constitutes a red line that must not be crossed.
Furuya, she said, has obstinately continued to engage in collusion with the separatist forces advocating “Taiwan independence,” which severely interferes in China’s internal affairs and undermines China’s sovereignty and core interests.
“We firmly oppose such acts and have taken lawful countermeasures to send a clear warning,” Zhu said.
She also slammed Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party authorities for their subservient courting of external forces in pursuit of selfish political gains, accusing them of betraying national interests and forsaking their own roots. “Such acts will inevitably be condemned by history,” Zhu added.
