BEIJING: China’s Ministry of National Defense has addressed speculation surrounding its potential first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, following discussion sparked by a recent promotional video from the People’s Liberation Army Navy.
At a press conference, spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang said that China approaches aircraft carrier development with careful consideration. “We always consider aircraft carrier construction comprehensively based on national security needs and the development of equipment and technology,” he stated.
The speculation emerged after viewers noticed a new recruit named “He Jian” in the video, a name that sounds similar to the Chinese term for “nuclear vessel,” commonly used to describe a nuclear-powered warship.
Addressing interpretations of the video, Zhang responded with a literary remark, saying, “As the saying goes, there are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes.”
