Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Finnish President Alexander Stubb agreed on Sunday to deepen bilateral cooperation, strengthen coordination, and work together to address global challenges during a meeting in Turku, Finland.
Stubb asked Wang to convey his best wishes to Chinese President Xi Jinping, recalling that his visit to China more than a year ago and his meeting with Xi had left a lasting positive impression.
Reflecting on the two countries’ diplomatic ties since 1950, Stubb praised China’s progress in politics, the economy, social stability, and scientific and technological innovation, describing it as a remarkable development success.
Highlighting the current global situation, Stubb said the international community is at a critical turning point and noted that China has brought valuable stability to the world. He said “The four global initiatives proposed by Xi offer a comprehensive and insightful assessment of international situation and clearly and systematically expound the response plans, carrying landmark significance in guiding the international community.”
Stubb also expressed Finland’s interest in increasing high-level exchanges with China, expanding cooperation in emerging sectors such as the green economy and artificial intelligence, enhancing multilateral coordination, and jointly responding to global challenges.
Wang conveyed President Xi’s greetings to Stubb and recalled Xi’s state visit to Finland in 2017, which coincided with the country’s centenary of independence. He said the visit reflected the Chinese people’s sincere congratulations to Finland.
Wang praised Finland’s achievements over the past century, saying the Finnish people, guided by their resilient spirit of “sisu,” had successfully advanced national development and rejuvenation.
He noted that this year marks the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC), adding that the party has led the country along a development path suited to its national conditions, delivering rapid economic growth, long-term social stability, and advancing Chinese modernization through high-quality development.
Addressing the international landscape, Wang said “the current international situation is fraught with chaos and turmoil, and the world faces the danger of regressing to the law of the jungle.” He added that “China will continue to be an important force for peace, stability and development in the world.”
Wang also said China is prepared to work with Finland, under the strategic guidance of both countries’ leaders, to strengthen their future-oriented cooperative partnership, enhance coordination, seize shared opportunities, and tackle common challenges.
During the visit, Wang also held talks with Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen.
