Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s official visit to Canada from May 28 to 30 resulted in extensive consensus and productive outcomes, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian.
Invited by Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, Wang’s trip marked the first visit to Canada by a Chinese foreign minister in 10 years. During the visit, he met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, held talks with Anand, and also met with former prime minister Jean Chrétien and other friendly figures.
According to Lin, the two sides held candid, in-depth and constructive discussions on advancing the China-Canada Comprehensive Strategic Partnership as well as on international and regional issues of shared concern. The talks produced broad consensus and a range of positive outcomes.
Both countries welcomed the progress achieved in bilateral relations since Prime Minister Carney’s visit to China in January. They agreed to strengthen dialogue and communication, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, expand cultural and people-to-people exchanges, enhance coordination in multilateral affairs, and work together to improve global governance mechanisms.
The two sides also agreed to establish a China-Canada Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue mechanism and resume political and security consultations, along with high-level national security and rule-of-law dialogues.
Wang noted that under the guidance of the leaders of both countries, China-Canada relations have returned to a positive trajectory. He said the development of bilateral ties demonstrates the importance of mutual respect, seeking common ground while managing differences, maintaining strategic independence, and pursuing mutually beneficial cooperation.
China is willing to work with Canada to implement the important consensus reached by the two leaders, further advance the China-Canada Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, prepare for Carney’s visit to China for the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, and promote the stable and sustainable development of bilateral relations, Lin said.
The Canadian side reaffirmed its commitment to developing the Canada-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and stated that it remains firmly committed to the one-China policy. Canada also expressed support for China’s hosting of this year’s APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and said it is honored to participate as the Guest Country of Honor at this year’s China International Import Expo.
According to Lin, Canada also hopes to increase its exports to China by 50 percent before 2030.
