Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday expressed their shared commitment to enhancing bilateral relations and supporting multilateral cooperation.
Carney said Canada is prepared to strengthen engagement with China through continued high-level exchanges and expanded collaboration in sectors including energy, finance, agriculture, and fisheries. He emphasized the importance of further reinforcing the foundations of the relationship between the two countries.
He also noted Canada’s support for China’s hosting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting and said Ottawa is willing to work alongside Beijing to promote and uphold multilateralism, contributing to global economic growth as well as international peace and stability.
Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the mutual benefits of stronger China-Canada ties. He stated that a positive relationship between the two countries aligns with the interests of both nations, meets broader international expectations, and remains the appropriate path forward for Canada. He added that the two sides have no fundamental conflicts of interest and possess significant potential for cooperation.
Wang said that both sides should uphold multilateralism, the international rule of law, and strategic autonomy, while actively supporting free trade and an open world economy.
