Web Desk (MNN); China on Sunday congratulated Cambodia on reaching a ceasefire with Thailand following weeks of deadly border clashes, as officials from the three countries prepared to begin a two-day meeting in southwestern China.

Thailand and Cambodia agreed on Saturday to end weeks of intense fighting along their shared border, which left at least 101 people dead and forced more than half a million residents to flee their homes. This marked the second ceasefire agreement between the two sides in recent months.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during a meeting with his Cambodian counterpart, described the ceasefire as an important step towards restoring peace and said it aligned with the shared expectations of countries in the region.

Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Thai representative Sihasak Phuangketkeow are expected to hold talks with Wang Yi in China’s Yunnan province on Sunday and Monday to discuss the evolving border situation.

According to China’s state news agency Xinhua, Wang urged both countries to work towards a complete and lasting ceasefire, resume normal exchanges, and rebuild mutual trust. He added that diplomats and military officials should use the Yunnan meetings to enhance communication and understanding.

Wang also said China was ready to provide humanitarian assistance to Cambodia to help resettle people displaced by the border conflict.
