Securing lasting ceasefire in Gaza is top priority: Chinese Envoy

China’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Fu Cong, has called on all parties—“Israel in particular”—to fully adhere to the Gaza ceasefire agreement and work toward a comprehensive and lasting truce.

Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on the Israel-Palestine situation on Monday, Fu welcomed the first-phase ceasefire deal but stressed that “true peace remains distant” as civilian suffering continues. He voiced concern over reports that Israel has committed more than 400 ceasefire violations, causing over 300 civilian deaths in Gaza.

“A ceasefire means a complete halt to all attacks,” Fu said, adding that civilian casualties are “unacceptable” and repeated strikes must not become the “new normal” in Gaza. Fu warned that the humanitarian situation remains dire, with severe shortages of food, medicine, and other essentials, and stressed that much of the aid entering Gaza falls short of what the ceasefire agreement requires. He urged Israel to meet its obligations under international humanitarian law, open all border crossings, lift access restrictions, and allow UNRWA and other agencies to operate freely. The envoy also criticized ongoing settlement expansion and settler violence in the West Bank, urging Israel to halt settlement activity and prevent actions that undermine Palestinian Authority governance.

Reaffirming China’s support for a two-State solution, Fu said Gaza and the West Bank are “inseparable parts” of a future Palestinian state and insisted any post-war arrangement must uphold the principle of “Palestinians governing Palestine.”His remarks came as Israeli forces killed three Palestinians near areas under Israeli control in Gaza on Monday, Reuters reported.

Two were killed and one injured when an Israeli drone struck a group east of Khan Younis, while a separate tank shell killed another person in eastern Gaza City.

UN experts have also warned that Israel’s continued violations threaten the fragile truce, urging all states to push for an immediate end to attacks on civilians and allow unimpeded delivery of humanitarian and medical aid.
