ISLAMABAD; Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani on Monday described Pakistan and China’s military cooperation as a “pillar of regional stability and deterrence,” reaffirming Islamabad’s commitment to its “iron brotherhood” with Beijing.

He was addressing a grand reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy to celebrate the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The event was attended by Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong, parliamentarians, diplomats, and dignitaries from diverse walks of life.

Extending warm felicitations on behalf of Parliament and the people of Pakistan, Gilani lauded China’s historic achievements since 1949, calling its success in eradicating poverty, advancing technology, and emerging as a global leader a “true miracle.” He credited the Communist Party of China (CPC), from Chairman Mao Zedong to President Xi Jinping, for steering the nation through reforms and innovation.

Highlighting defence cooperation, Gilani pointed to landmark ventures such as the JF-17 Thunder programme and the induction of advanced J-10C fighter jets into Pakistan’s air fleet. He noted that during escalations with India, Chinese aircraft significantly enhanced Pakistan’s defence preparedness, underlining that the partnership remains vital for regional peace and deterrence.

On economic cooperation, he hailed the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as the “flagship project” of the bilateral relationship, describing Gwadar Port as a “gateway of trade and prosperity.” He stressed that CPEC is not only about infrastructure but also a vision of shared growth for both nations.

The Senate chairman also praised China’s consistent support during Pakistan’s difficult times — from earthquakes and floods to the COVID-19 pandemic — saying Beijing’s timely assistance symbolised the depth of brotherhood between the two nations.

He further highlighted cultural and educational linkages, including Confucius Institutes, scholarships, and cultural exchanges, as critical elements deepening people-to-people ties. Referring to President Asif Ali Zardari’s recent visit to China, Gilani welcomed the new MoUs in textiles, livestock modernisation, and emergency equipment, saying these agreements would aid Pakistan’s economic revival.

Paying tribute to the founding architects of Pak-China ties — Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Chairman Mao Zedong, and Premier Zhou Enlai — Gilani said their visionary leadership cemented a bond that “withstood political storms” and is grounded in geography and human values.

Concluding, he reaffirmed that Pakistan and China are “destined to walk together through history,” stressing that their all-weather partnership continues to contribute to regional stability, economic integration, and global peace.
