During a recent engagement, the Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) outlined plans to develop structured collaborative frameworks focused on advancing training initiatives for early-career scientists and researchers from Pakistan. The institute further affirmed its dedication to delivering technological assistance aimed at enhancing health infrastructure and diagnostic capabilities.

Qaiser Nawab, Chairman of the Belt and Road Initiative for Sustainable Development (BRISD), visited BGI’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China, to explore joint opportunities in health, biotechnology, and scientific capacity enhancement. Nawab was cordially welcomed by Mao Zhixia, BGI Senior Official and Head of South Asia Affairs.

Mao Zhixia presented a detailed account of BGI’s trajectory, from its foundational stages to its current position as the world’s foremost genomics research organization. He emphasized BGI’s pioneering contributions in gene sequencing, health diagnostics, precision medicine, and pandemic management. Both parties conducted extensive dialogues on the future of global health innovation, articulating strong enthusiasm for deeper bilateral partnerships.

Nawab underscored BRISD’s mission to drive inclusive and sustainable development through science and technology, specifically by empowering young scientists across the Global South. The meeting culminated in shared intent to formalize cooperation frameworks supporting training programs for emerging researchers from Pakistan and other Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) nations. Additionally, both sides prioritized extending technological support to fortify health systems in developing regions.

Nawab remarked, “BGI is a shining example of what innovation and commitment to science can achieve. Their journey is an inspiration to developing nations. I believe our cooperation can unlock enormous potential in health, education, and scientific research for countries along the Belt and Road.” This visit signifies a critical progression in cultivating transnational scientific alliances and reinforcing health ecosystems through innovation and knowledge exchange.
