China’s position on the Ukraine issue remains objective and impartial, and Beijing will continue working with the international community to support a political settlement of the crisis, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Sun Lei said during a UN Security Council briefing on Ukraine on Tuesday.
Addressing the meeting, Sun noted that the conflict continues to intensify, with ongoing strikes, casualties and damage to infrastructure. He stressed that despite changing developments on the battlefield, “military means cannot bring about peace, and allowing the conflict to continue will only take a greater toll.”
Outlining China’s position, Sun called on the parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions or push the situation out of control.
“We hope that all relevant sides will keep demonstrating patience, good faith, and flexibility, resume peace talks as soon as possible, and address the legitimate security concerns of one another, with a view to reaching a comprehensive, lasting, and binding peace agreement,” he said.
Sun also urged regional countries and the broader international community to strengthen diplomatic efforts aimed at building trust and facilitating dialogue rather than worsening the conflict.
“We hope that countries in the region and the international community at large will amplify the voice of reason calling for the cessation of hostilities and talks for peace, and engage in greater diplomatic efforts to build trust and mediate a settlement, instead of fanning the flames or adding fuel to the fire,” he said.
Emphasizing the importance of addressing the underlying causes of the crisis, Sun called for efforts to build a balanced, effective and sustainable regional security framework in line with the principles of the UN Charter.
He added that China has actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to promote peace and dialogue and reiterated Beijing’s commitment to supporting a negotiated resolution.
“We will continue our efforts, along with the international community, to contribute positively to the political settlement of the crisis,” Sun said.
