China places significant importance on the safety and security of nuclear facilities and maintains that lasting solutions to nuclear safety concerns are tied to progress toward a political resolution of the Ukraine crisis, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Monday.
Speaking at a regular press briefing, Lin responded to reports that Ukraine accused Russia of striking a spent nuclear fuel storage facility. According to the Ukrainian side, the incident followed Russia’s occupation of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and raised concerns over nuclear and radiation safety in the country.
Lin reiterated China’s position, stating that “Dialogue and negotiation are the only viable way out,” and emphasized that addressing nuclear facility safety issues ultimately depends on advancing a political settlement to the conflict.
He also called on all parties involved to take steps to reduce tensions and help create favorable conditions for restarting peace talks. “China urges all parties concerned to work together to cool down the situation as soon as possible and create conditions for the resumption of dialogue and negotiations,” Lin said.
