BEIJING, (Xinhua): Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Wednesday that China and Australia should work together to support multilateralism, uphold the global free trade system, and ensure stable and efficient industrial and supply chains. He stressed the importance of contributing constructively to resolving global hotspot issues and advancing a fairer and more balanced system of global governance.
Wang made these remarks during the eighth China-Australia diplomatic and strategic dialogue held in Beijing with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
He highlighted that stronger people-to-people exchanges benefit both nations and called on both governments to deepen mutual understanding. Wang also expressed hope that Australia would ensure the safety and legitimate rights of Chinese citizens.
Addressing regional cooperation, Wang said China’s engagement with Pacific Island countries is not directed at any third party and urged Australia to approach such cooperation objectively and rationally.
He further noted that as the rotating chair of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, China is ready to enhance collaboration with all members, including Australia, to revitalize efforts toward building an Asia-Pacific community.
Wang also provided a detailed explanation of China’s stance on the Taiwan issue.
For her part, Wong said that the Australian side adheres to the one-China policy, opposes “Taiwan independence,” and hopes that the Taiwan question can be peacefully resolved.
She added that the two economies are highly complementary and that strengthening cooperation in areas such as trade and economy aligns with mutual interests. Wong also stated that Australia supports China in hosting the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, does not exclude any country from cooperation in the development of island nations, and is willing to work with China to safeguard international rules and ensure energy security.
