Global Times: The US’ accusations are based on speculation and vague insinuations and are completely groundless, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, in response to media inquiry on reports that Christopher Yeaw, the US’ assistant secretary of state for the bureau of arms control and nonproliferation, has recently accused China of having conducted nuclear explosion test, and said the US will return to testing on an equal basis. The website of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization released information stating that on June 22, 2020, two very small seismic events were detected within China, and that with the relevant data alone, it is not possible to assess the cause of these events with confidence.
Mao said that China has repeatedly reiterated that it has always firmly supported the purposes and objectives of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and has consistently honored the commitment of the five nuclear-weapon states to a moratorium on nuclear testing. In order to evade its international arms control obligations, the US has gone so far as to frame and smear other countries, which seriously undermines its own international credibility. China urges the US to abide by its commitment to a moratorium on nuclear testing, uphold the international consensus on banning nuclear testing, and stop looking for excuses to restart nuclear tests.
