Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) has accomplished a substantial safety milestone at its Thar desert mining operations, achieving 15 million work hours without a single major injury incident. The Thar coal mining initiative represents a cornerstone public-private collaboration within the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), jointly developed by the Sindh Government, prominent Pakistani entities including Engro Energy and HUBCO, and technical partners from China.
Operating within Thar Coal Block II, the open-pit mine generates 7.6 million tons of indigenous lignite coal annually. This output directly supplies the extensive HUBCO, Shanghai Electric, and ThalNova power facilities, advancing Pakistan’s national objective of energy self-reliance. The company formally acknowledged this safety accomplishment in an official statement.
Energy analyst Engr. Muhammad Aziz remarked, “This represents a critical benchmark in high-risk sectors such as mining. It demonstrates a robust safety culture, stringent adherence to international best practices, and optimized operations with minimal disruptions.” Aziz highlighted that such safety performance elevates worker morale and serves as a decisive metric for investors assessing CPEC-linked energy infrastructure ventures.
